It was a heartbreak night for Gareth Southgate's men, who had taken the lead through Marcus Rashford's penalty, only to be hauled back by Matthijs de Ligt's late equaliser.

"It wasn't just the two goals, we made errors and gave opportunities which should have been punished before that".

Manchester City defender John Stones lost the ball to Holland forward Memphis Depay, and though England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford brilliantly stopped the Dutch forward's shot, Kyle Walker could only deflect the loose ball into his own net under pressure from Quincy Promes.

Southgate throughout his tenure has repeatedly encouraged his side to pay out from the back.

"One day VAR might help us but today it didn't".

"Now, that might sound obvious as he got player of the year this season but year on year, if you said to me "name the best players", I'd always put him in along with Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Mohamed Salah, Harry Kane, Eden Hazard and so on". They had their pressing right. A few players were missing that usually play.

"There might be someone who has a better season than some of those players one season but, consistently, they're the best - and Van Dijk will always be in that list".

England though thought they had won the game before 90 minutes was up when Jesse Lingard scored, what he thought, was the victor.

"We have still made progress to get to this stage but it is about kicking on and making that last step now".

England will now play Switzerland on Sunday afternoon in a bid to claim third place in the Nations League.
