Google is restricting Huawei's access. Here's what that means

Question: Will this suspension of business with Google have an impact on Huawei's business in China?

On Monday, the Commerce Department granted Huawei a licence to buy USA goods until August 19 to maintain existing telecoms networks and provide software updates to Huawei smartphones, a move meant to give telecom operators that rely on Huawei time to make other arrangements.

Huawei and the Commerce Department didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Huawei never disclosed numbers separately but Honor is likely to account for less than 10 percent of the estimated 200 million smartphones that the Chinese company sold in 2018. Huawei phones have been removed from the Android Q Beta page, so the company presumably has been kicked out of the Android Q early-access program for manufacturers.

"The worst case would eventually see a total cutoff of access to U.S. technology - (Huawei) would nearly certainly not survive this outcome in its current form", the Eurasia Group consultancy said in a report issued Sunday.

The U.S. Commerce Department said it was giving companies until August 19 to work with Huawei and devise a long-term plan would keep systems running and protect current users from threats and security risks, CNBC reported Tuesday. As one of Android's key global partners, we have worked closely with their open-source platform to develop an ecosystem that has benefitted both users and the industry.

Liu said Huawei had been working on its own operating system but that he didn't have the details about when this would be ready.

"We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications".

In response to the Commerce Department's decision, Google has resumed working with Huawei on Android updates and has put its plans to cut the company off on hold, according to CNBC. It also has its own OS for its Watch GT smart watch series.

Digital multipolarity is as much of a feature of the Silk Road Century as the Belt & Road Initiative's (BRI) many megaprojects are, with each of them going hand-in-hand in connecting the world and advancing the grand goal of creating a community of shared destiny. And that sure will make things interesting.

The license will enable Huawei to continue its current operations with US-based companies including Google, Intel, etc. "It seems they're trying to prevent network blackouts".

Although the exemption can extend beyond ninety days, it remains to be seen whether that will happen.

The spat has also drawn in Canada after Huawei's Chief Financial Oficer Meng Wanzhou, who is also Ren's daughter, was detained there in December following a U.S. extradition request related to alleged violations of Washington's sanctions on Iran.

"All Huawei phones actually run Android, which is made by Google's parent company, Alphabet", he told 3AW's Tom Elliott. That way, the company will be able to support its existing devices and customers and issue security updates for the same. An app store is worthless without the popular services that smartphone users in most Western economies have come to rely on. At least our 5G technology won't be affected. You will be able to continue using these services as you normally would. So far Microsoft has stayed out of the fray, although Huawei Windows 10 machines may become embroiled in the controversy soon, too.
