Grumpy Cat's death has shocked millions around the world, and her death was trending on Twitter the morning of the announcement. At her height, she showed up on television shows, drew crowds at SXSW, and showed up in promotions for Cheerios and Friskies.

Internet star "Grumpy Cat" has died at the age of seven, her owners said early on May 17.

In 2018, United States coffee company Grenade was ordered to pay the Bundesens $710,000 for exceeding an agreement to use her image.

"Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world - even when times were tough", Grumpy's family wrote on Instagram. "Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere".

Grumpy Cat has 8.5 million fans on Facebook, 2.5 million followers on Instagram and 1.5 million on Twitter.

Despite her permanent frown, she was "super cute and cuddly".

The feline's net worth was never disclosed but in 2013, her owners say it was six figures.

Pictures of her perpetually unimpressed face have been a staple of social media ever since.
