2020 BMW M5 Edition 35 Jahre Takes Competition to New Levels

BMW concedes that the Competition is very much the "point of departure" for the Edition 35 Years, although given that car's startling 3.3-second-to-62mph performance, it's hard to feel shortchanged - even allowing for the fact that it was more power that distinguished the F10 30 Jahre M5 in 2014.

BMW will celebrate 35 years of its M5 super saloon with a limited-run reworking of the 616bhp M5 Competition. How time flies when you're having fun in a German supersedan.

Based on the M5 Competition, the M5 Edition 35 Years produces the same 617 hp and 553 lb-ft torque, along with the same 0-60 miles per hour time of 3.1 seconds and top speed of 189 miles per hour. The Edition 35 stands out from a regular-production model with Frozen Dark Grey II metallic paint, 20-inch Y-spoke alloy wheels, and high-gloss black paint on the brake calipers. The vehicle comes in Frozen Dark Grey metallic paint with special pigmentation that gives it a matte silk surface, 20-inch M light alloy wheels in Y spoke design and high-gloss black brake calipers. BMW says the material is a "shimmering gold anodized aluminum carbon structure", and it basically looks like bright-gold carbon fiber. The panel on the center console is engraved with a badge that reads "M5 Edition 35 Jahre"; the doorsills also get this engraving. Every Edition 35 comes with the Executive Package, which bundles a long list of luxury features like soft-close doors, power sunshades, a wireless device charger, plus heated front and rear seats, among others. There's also a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that's paired with the 10.3-inch central display that was first seen on the X5 and 8-Series.

The heart of the 2020 BMW M5 Edition 35 Years auto is the M TwinPower Turbocharged 4.4L V8 generating 617 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque.

Open the door to climb in and you'll find sill finishers bearing the inscription "M5 Edition 35 Jahre", as well as "M5 Edition 35 Jahre 1/350" on the cupholder cover in the centre console. It's priced starting at $128,995, which is $17,000 pricier than a 2019 M5 Competition.
