Real Madrid have overtaken Manchester United as the most valuable football brand in the official Finance Football 50 rankings.

Barcelona are in third spot in terms of brand value, followed by Bayern Munich and then Manchester City, who head Liverpool.

As for other Spanish clubs in the top 50, Atletico Madrid stay in 14th, Sevilla have risen 13 places to 35th, Athletic Club drop to 45th, Villarreal climb to 47th and Valencia are 48th. The value of the capital club's brand increased by 27% from a year ago, which was when it became the first in the world to reach 750 million euros in revenue.

The news comes from Brand Finance, the world's leading independent brand valuation consultancy, who anually releases its Football 50.

"The most successful club in the history of European football is finally reaping the benefits of decades of spectacular on- and off -pitch performances".

According to the study, Los Blancos have a brand value of 1.646 million euros, making them one of only six clubs to exceed one billion.

"Manchester United have disappointed in recent years on the playing field both in the Premier League and in the UEFA Champions League".

The Old Trafford club's brand value fell by 6% and it was rated only 18th in a fans' list for "exciting football".
