Matthijs De Ligt remains interested in a move to Manchester United

On May 16th, we carried a report from Mundo Deportivo, who explained that Barcelona are in "pole" position to sign Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt, but there's "still no agreement" to complete the transfer. A few days later, Catalan TV station Esport 3 reported that the player's agent, Mino Raiola, had met with Barcelona representatives in Montecarlo on April 12 to agree terms for the Ajax defender's move to Camp Nou.

De Ligt's valuation has risen with Ajax's domestic double and their progress to the Champions League semi-final, and United may have to stump with a sum of around £60m to prise him away from the Dutch capital.

Many felt as though it would be nearly impossible for United to sign him, given the Red Devils will not play in the Champions League next season, but The Telegraph claim that De Ligt would still be open to moving to the club - even without Champions League football next year.

De Ligt is wanted by nearly every European giant this summer, with Barcelona thought to be leading the race for his signature, but the transfer has stalled in the last few weeks.

Stam commented: "It's important that he'll get playing time".

"If you look at the squads: Barcelona, after losing to Liverpool, probably want to strengthen their squad, especially in defence, if you ask me. The question is whether he'll solve their problems", Stam told DAZN.

"It's a good list of names and the fact that they won this award is an additional motivation for me to achieve everything I can in my career", said De Ligt. "It'd be great to see him come up against better players, in a better league, not just every other week but every weekend". I think he has enough quality to do so. "In this case, money doesn't matter".
