Former Socceroos skipper Mile Jedinak scored with his only kick in the game as Aston Villa reached the League Championship final by beating West Bromwich Albion in a penalty shootout.

Villa beat West Brom 4-3 in Wednesday's (AEST) shootout after their semi-final finished 2-2 on aggregate following the latter's 1-0 win in the second leg.

Tammy Abraham - Villa's striker on loan from English Premier League club Chelsea - netted the winning penalty to send the Birmingham club into the playoffs final for the second consecutive year.

Villa, relegated in 2016, will hope to avoid a repeat of a year ago when they lost to Fulham in the playoff final.

Craig Dawson's first-half header brought the Baggies level in the tie, but after captain Chris Brunt received a red card with 10 minutes of regulation time remaining, Villa assumed full control.

"It's no good getting to Wembley and falling at the final hurdle again, so fingers crossed", Villa midfielder Jack Grealish, who converted his penalty, told Sky Sport.

"There's obviously a lot of luck involved but wow - we practise penalties, so I think I must've faced 100 a day the last few days", Steer said.

The Championship playoff final will take place on Sunday, May 26.
