Near the end of the episode, as the city was being reduced to ash by a suddenly full-on Mad Queen Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and the queensguard had been vanquished, Cersei and Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) managed to reconnect in the cellars beneath the Red Keep.

Lena, 45, told Entertainment Weekly she had "mixed feelings" about her character's abrupt ending as she hoped Cersei would have a "big piece" or die in a dramatic fight.

Then, despite Tyrion's best efforts to convince her to chill, she officially declared it time to attack King's Landing regardless of the people inside and sent the Unsullied ahead, telling Grey Worm to wait for her outside and he'd know when it was time to strike. The Battle of King's Landing resulted in the death of a multitude of major characters.

In their final moments together, it's "maybe the first time that Cersei has been at peace", Headey noted.

Of course, that line never made it into the show - only the part about her bearing three children who would end up in gold shrouds was revealed onscreen - but many fans believed that it would still foretell her fate on the show as well. "They came into the world together and now they leave together".

"I think the important thing is that Jaime had a chance at freedom [with Brienne] and finally liberated himself from Cersei, which I think the audience will be thrilled about", Headey said. No, she had much more to do after that after seeing Missandei executed.

And for Headey and Coster-Waldau, saying goodbye to their characters was surprisingly emotional. "And he's all, 'What's happening to me?' We kept cuddling going, 'I love you.' It was weird".

She said: 'There's a sense of loss that nothing like this will ever happen again. There was a great sense of grief and an enormous amount of gratitude going on'.

The penultimate episode of Game of Thrones was positively filled to the brim with carnage, and its loyal fans were there every step of the way to make their thoughts on what went down known across social media.
