'Avengers: Endgame' Wins Third Weekend At Box Office Over 'Detective Pikachu'

It opened at #2, behind the absolute juggernaut that is Avengers: Endgame, which pulled in $63 million in its third weekend. The box office juggernaut has amassed a monster $1.7 billion overseas, ranking just behind "Avatar" ($2.02 billion) on global box office charts. The fourth Avengers film has become the third highest grossing film at the domestic box office, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.6M) and Avatar ($760.5M). "Avengers: Endgame" is now the biggest Hollywood film in the Middle Kingdom's history, crossing $600 million. The bad news is that "Endgame" will be facing some heavy competition at the box office in the coming weeks with "John Wick: Chapter 3" opening May 17th, "Aladdin" opening May 24th and "Godzilla: King Of The Monsters" opening May 31st. Detective Pikachu is already the #10 highest-grossing video game film in the United States so far. That would be the highest USA opening weekend box office for any film adaptation of a video game (unadjusted for inflation), topping Lara Croft Tomb Raider's US$47.7 million in 2001. Since launching in Japan last weekend, the live-action Pokemon movie has earned $12.9 million in that territory, bringing its worldwide haul to $170 million. Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is directed the Pokemon film from a script written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of The Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls).

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios' grand conclusion to twenty-two films, "Avengers: Endgame". Other new releases this weekend included the Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson comedy The Hustle (No. 3, $13.5 million), and the Diane Keaton movie Poms, which made $5.1 million to come in sixth place this weekend. Top territories include Russian Federation with $2.4 million, Germany with $1.8 million, and Australia with $1.8 million.
