Attorney General Bill Barr indicated he was going to look into the origins of the Russian Federation investigation, and it appears he's now taking concrete steps to do so.

John Henry Durham (born 1950) is the United States Attorney for the District of CT. The person could not discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

In April, a Trump administration official told Fox News that Barr had assembled a team to investigate the origins of the Obama administration's FBI counterintelligence investigation of the Trump campaign.

While Durham has been appointed to this special investigative assignment, he is notably not a special counsel, a role that would come with increased authority.

The New York Times and Associated Press both reported Monday evening that Barr had tapped Durham to "determine if intelligence collection involving the Trump campaign was 'lawful and appropriate'".

He may have been referring to a surveillance warrant the Federal Bureau of Investigation obtained on ex-Trump associate Carter Page and the use of an Federal Bureau of Investigation informant to look into former Trump campaign foreign police adviser George Papadopoulos.

The Justice Department inspector general, Michael Horowitz, is also investigating whether political bias influenced investigation decisions related to the president and his campaign.

Congressional Republicans have also said they'll look into how the investigation began and whether there are any legal concerns.

"Now, the former director is a partisan pundit, selling books, and earning speaking fees while speculating about the strength of my character and the fate of my immortal soul", he said.
