Washinton Examiner: US natural gas exports to Europe surge almost 300%

EU plans to seek double imports of liquid natural gas from the US as trade lever

EU plans to seek double imports of liquid natural gas from the US as trade lever

The meeting, similar to one held after the previous vote in 2014, would give leaders a chance to discuss their preferences for who will succeed Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the European Commission, three senior EU officials told Reuters. As a result, March 2019 recorded the highest volume ever of EU-U.S. trade in LNG with more than 1.4 billion cubic metres. "It is therefore our common objective to further deepen our energy cooperation", the minister added.

Houston-based Cheniere Energy Inc.in March began construction on its Midship Pipeline, a 200-mile pipe created to transport up to 1.44 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas from Kingfisher County to southern Oklahoma, where it will connect with existing pipelines that will move the natural gas to the Gulf Coast and Cheniere's two liquefied natural gas export terminals.

According to the Commission, "the European Union is ready to facilitate more imports of liquefied natural gas from the United States, if the market conditions are right and prices competitive".

The EU is seeking to double imports of liquid natural gas from the U.S.by 2023 as a part of an effort to ease trade tensions. "When it comes to natural gas, we each have what the other needs to derive tremendous mutual benefit from advancing our energy relationship". The Zeebrugge terminal recently welcomed its first delivery of U.S. LNG, making Belgium the 35th country to import LNG from the United States.

Juncker said the European Union would build more terminals to import LNG. This authorization reaffirms US commitment to partnering with European Union countries, including Poland, as they seek diversification of their energy supplies. The group discussed the importance of European energy security, and how diversification of energy supply, sources, and routes is critical to that security. However, in the 9-month period since the Joint Statement (August 2018 - April 2019), this share rises to almost 30%.
