Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet Launches 2020 White House Bid After Cancer Battle

Michael Bennet, who has served as a USA senator from Colorado since 2009, is the latest Democrat to join the crowded field of candidates in the 2020 presidential race. Bennet had surgery shortly after the diagnosis and announced last month that doctors gave him a clean bill of health. Nearly two weeks after his clean bill of health, the senator formally announced his intentions.

Bennet had already said in March that he was considering a Presidential bid.

It's time for Congress to move past the standoff over border funding, says Colorado Senator Michael Bennet, Democratic member of the Senate Intelligence and Finance Committees.

In a campaign video, Bennet also highlighted goals that included improving the healthcare system and investing in education and job training. "He has won every political race he's entered". She said she was excited about him running.

But some influential Democrats are paying attention to Bennet, including former President Barack Obama, who named Bennet-along with fellow presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg-as a rising politician to watch.

Distinguishing his campaign from a field of 20 other candidates will be one of Bennet's struggles.

Bennet told CBS he was focused on economic mobility and integrity in government.

In his announcement interview, Bennet seemed confident he could differentiate himself from the pack of candidates because, in part, he will be honest with the voters.

"I'm not going to pretend free college is the answer", he said.

"I don't want to be hysterical, but if it was left in me undetected, it could kill me". "When the campaigning never stops, government never begins". But when he re-entered public life, he did so as a Democrat, serving as chief of staff to then-Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.

"It's a pretty good start for impressing Democrats across the country but he doesn't have a deep well to draw from", he said. "There's not a whole lot of difference between them". I think I'm going to be fine.

However, Bennet took a break from politics in the late 1990s to work as the managing director for the Anschutz Investment Company, a venture capital investment firm.

"This isn't just about President Trump", the senator said.

Bennet has been a vocal opponent in the Democratic Party of the push for single-payer health care championed by Sen. Bennet was re-elected to the Senate in 2010 and 2016.

Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado wasn't a household name outside of his state until January, when he made an impassioned speech criticizing Texas Senator Ted Cruz over his position on the government shutdown. "This bill makes it easier for veterans to access the capital that is key to starting businesses and supporting jobs in communities throughout Colorado and the country".
