"I said to my caddie Harry (before the second shot): 'Is left bunker OK?' "That's where I assumed it was going to go but it came out flawless, had a little more cut on it than I thought it would out of the rough, took a nice couple of hops and got up there pretty close".

Dahmen, a cancer survivor who tries not to take himself too seriously, played a more steady game.

The Northern Irishman started Friday with a share of top spot following an opening round of 66, and looked set to improve his standing when he moved to nine under, having carded five birdies and one bogey after 16 holes.

Justin Rose is one further back after a bogey-free 67, while Martin Laird is four under after bogeys at 17 and 18.

Defending champion Jason Day led a large pack at 68.

At the Volvo China Open, 14-year-old Kuang Yang became the second-youngest player to make a cut.

With two players going for their first win, and Dufner still trying to emerge from a slump, McIlroy liked his position two shots behind.

David Lipsky, a victor this season at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, and Tapio Pulkkanen also shot 65s. Another Chinese in Ashun Wu Shenzhen led at the halfway point on 13-under.

Paul Casey made 15 pars and still managed to make up five shots on the lead, courtesy of a pair of eagles and on birdie.

Van Dam bogeyed two of the first four holes in her afternoon round at Lake Merced.

"Hit two poor irons, actually, three poor irons in my first five holes", van Dam said. "I think it's the purest golf course we play all year in terms of preparation and how manicured it is".

Van Dam has struggled in her first season on the LPGA Tour, breaking 70 for only the fifth time in 17 rounds. "After I made double, then I got nervous because I didn't want to shoot myself out of this thing". I've always felt comfortable here. "I can hit long drivers and can be aggressive with my short irons. So, I really enjoyed the course".

Ryu closed with a bogey on the par-5 ninth.

The golf course "went through different iterations since we started coming here, but every time they tweak something here or there, you know, it's still sort of the same place and it really fits my eye", McIlroy said.
