Golden Knights’ McCrimmon no longer candidate for Oilers GM position

The Vegas Golden Knights made a genius move in their front office on Thursday, with GM George McPhee stepping down from his position effective September 1st.

The Vegas Golden Knights clearly had no interest in letting Kelly McCrimmon leave and join another front office.

He takes over the role from George McPhee, who will remain Vegas' president of hockey operations. "His character, leadership, hockey acumen, and player evaluation at both the pro and amateur levels is exceptional".

Host Craig Ellingson talks to hockey beat writers Rob Tychkowski and Derek Van Diest about the ongoing Edmonton Oilers' search for a new general manager, which is rumoured to have been whittled down to a handful of candidates.

In his new role, McCrimmon will represent the Golden Knights at the league's GM meetings and be the point of contact for other GMs.

He had served as McPhee's top assistant since August 2016, a year before the franchise made its on-ice debut.

"George and Kelly are a fantastic team", Bill Foley, the team's owner, states in a post on the team's website. From the mock draft exercises and preparation leading up to the Expansion Draft, building out our coaching staff, and continually improving our team through the draft, trades, signings and free agency, the work they have done over the last three years has been remarkable.
