Eli Manning had 'no response' to Giants drafting Daniel Jones

Since last week's National Football League draft, one of the most criticized selections has been the New York Giants' pick of former Duke quarterback Daniel Jones at No. 6 overall.

"He's had no response", Shurmur said. "I'll say this again - I've never been around a person that can stay in the moment better than Eli".

"I spoke to him on the phone Friday", Jones said. "He's staying in the moment".

Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones dropped back, surveyed the field, sidestepped the rush during a full-team 11-on-11 blitz period and fired a pass in the direction of wide receiver Reggie White Jr. that was batted away by first-round choice DeAndre Baker right into the hands of cornerback MckInley Whitefield. Using such a high pick on that position instantly makes him their quarterback of the future, and the likely successor to Manning, who is 38 years old and on the final year of his contract.

The Giants called Manning, a two-time Super Bowl victor and generally considered the best quarterback in franchise history, as they were making the pick last Thursday night. They had talked to him throughout the pre-draft process about the possibility of taking a quarterback with one of their premium picks.

Jones will have big shoes to fill as the heir apparent to Eli Manning but he is fully embracing the chance to have the two-time Super Bowl champion as his mentor.

"He was fine. I told him, 'It's your job, let's go, '" general manager Dave Gettleman said after the first round of the draft.

Nothing seems to have changed nine days later. Manning was at work this week conducting business as usual.

"He's training to play and have a terrific season", Shurmur said. "It's the second year in our system and. he knows what we're doing better than some of the guy teaching him".

By now, Manning might be getting used to a new hot-shot quarterback being added to the roster.

Jones, Webb and Lauletta all were Senior Bowl MVPs prior to joining the Giants. The Giants' offense has lacked a mobile quarterback in Eli Manning's recent seasons, and Jones had the look of a quarterback plenty capable of salvaging a play when things get chaotic around him in the pocket. How he carries himself and how he prepares every week. You always have back and forth.

Daniel Jones officially began his first day of work with the New York Giants as rookie mini-camp started in East Rutherford on Friday.

"They will work together well", Archie Manning said. "Eli will be a good mentor".
