The Red Devils slipped up in their hopes of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League at the weekend as they were thrashed 4-0 by Everton.

However, he doesn't expect the run-in to be easy, as Manchester City still have to negotiate the taks of facing Manchester United at Old Trafford in mid week - a prospect he understands puts the United fans in quite a pickle.

United, who have 64 points from 34 games and sit two points adrift of Arsenal in fourth, face Chelsea, Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City in their final three matches of the season.

There are five forwards at that club: Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba - who is nearer to the front.

- Did you see Solskjaer reduced to tears after defeat?

"Don't ever let these players dictate the club about signing contracts, showing a poor attitude - just get rid of them".

A top-four spot is the minimum guarantee for Champions League football next season though the Gunners can still secure their target via the Europa League.

"The Champions League is massive for them".

However, should United nick a point or more against City, they may well end up gifting their eternal rivals a free run to their first ever Premier League title.

"We were beaten on all aspects today and the only place we beat Everton - I can't say we beat them - but we had a fantastic support and I just want to apologise for the performance we turned out", he told BBC's Match of the Day.

"They've always been decent fans, United, they've always given everyone a fair crack of the whip".

"It's fine pointing out what went wrong but I want to know why, I want to know why you can't get a group of footballers at United to give the same effort as Everton.

Everton. And Manchester United players, honestly, it's embarrassing just watching some of those out there today, I'm absolutely furious".

Manchester City have won ten league games in a row going into Wednesday's Manchester derby.

"Obviously we could have won it against them last season and they scored a couple of good goals and got the victory", he said.
