Businessman Francois-Henri Pinault and his billionaire father Francois Pinault said they were immediately giving 100 million euros from their company, Artemis, to help finance repairs to the cathedral devastated by fire Monday night.

Most of the roof has been destroyed, its steeple has collapsed and an unknown number of artifacts and paintings have been lost.

The cathedral's famous 18th century organ that boasts more than 8,000 pipes also survived.

Hopes for a rebuild of the iconic cathedral are strong among Parisians the ABC spoke with. "The majesty of Notre Dame - the history, artistry, and spirituality - took our breath away, lifting us to a higher understanding of who we are and who we can be", she tweeted.

The Crown of Thorns, one of the cathedral's treasures, was rescued.

As support poured in from all quarters, emotional and financial, French President Emmanuel Macron vowed to rebuild the cathedral "within five years". "And we can do it".

A Paris judicial official, speaking anonymously, said staff checked under the roof after the first alarm and saw nothing - but when the fire was discovered 23 minutes later, after the second alarm, it was already too late to stop the inferno. We rebuilt Warsaw from the ruins ourselves.

"If you've been to the cathedral, you'll never forget it", said Mulaire. Shortly after, it crumpled and fell through the cathedral roof.

"The task is - now the risk of fire has been put aside - about the building, how the structure will resist", said Junior Interior Minister Laurent Nunez in front of the cathedral.

The blaze burned for almost eight hours before it was contained.

"The entire fire is out", declared Paris firefighters' spokesman Gabriel Plus, adding that workers were "surveying the movement of structures and extinguishing smouldering residues".

US President Donald Trump relayed Americans' "condolences" to Macron over the fire, the White House said.

Gabriel Plus said Tuesday morning that emergency services are now "surveying the movement of the structures and extinguishing smoldering residues".

The exact cause of the blaze wasn't known, but French media quoted the fire brigade as saying it was "potentially linked" to a 6 million euro ($6.8 million) renovation project on the church's spire and its 250 tons of lead.

He said the investigation would likely be "long and complex". Officials have reportedly ruled out the possibility that the blaze was deliberately set.

Thousands of Parisians and tourists watched in horror Monday as flames engulfed the building and rescuers tried to save as much as they could of the cathedral's treasures. Two police officers and a firefighter were slightly injured. Brought to Paris by King Louis IX in the 13th century, it is purported to have been pressed onto Christ's head during the crucifixion.
