A New York City college student died after falling in the school's bell tower, weeks before she was scheduled to graduate.

The university is now investigating how the students gained access to the tower.

A Fordham University student who fell about 30 feet from inside a clock tower early Sunday has died, school officials said.

She was with other seniors when she fell through an opening on the first landing of the tower, the paper reported.

Following her fall, Monfries was taken to nearby St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx where she was later pronounced dead. "As the clock tower is a rather unsafe, and therefore secured, area of campus, students would likely face disciplinary action if they entered it".

The circumstances of her fall were not immediately available, police said.

Christopher Rodgers, dean of students at Rose Hill, told The Ram in 2013 that since "the clock tower is rather unsafe, and therefore secured area of campus, students would likely face disciplinary action if they entered it".

Her family rushed to her side, along with two priests, one from the Catholic university, however she sadly died on Sunday evening.

A waiter at the restaurant where they had dinner beforehand told The New York Post that he did not know if they had been drinking. The "New York Post" quotes, however, several students, after which the door was not always locked. My roommate was with them. "You have to go into the tunnels underground and you have to go into the bell tower".

"She couldn't breathe. She hit her head".

Her death was announced to students in an email sent by the school, which described the "unimaginable loss" suffered by Ms Monfries' family, friends and school community. A bright student according to Fordham University staff, Monfries studied journalism and was an intern at InStyle Magazine with a promising future.

According to reports, the student apparently climbed into the clock tower with friends.

The degree will presented to her parents at the appropriate time.

"There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise-and mere weeks from graduation", University President Joseph M. McShane said.
