Makar to join Avs after signing ELC

Cale Makar, the University of Massachusetts' first-ever Hobey Baker Award victor, announced Sunday that he's headed to the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday, one day after playing in the program's first-ever NCAA championship game. Game 3 of the series is Monday night in Colorado.

Cale Makar poses for photos after being selected as the number four overall pick to the Colorado Avalanche in the first round of the 2017 NHL Draft at the United Center. Makar was also named the 2019 Hobey Baker Award victor, becoming the first player in school history to win college hockey's top individual prize.

Makar won the Hobey Baker award this season as the NCAA's top hockey player after scoring 16 goals and 33 assists over 41 games.

The Avs signed the reigning Hobey Baker Award victor Sunday, and he will join the team immediately for its series against the Calgary Flames. Makar could potentially crack the Avs' lineup and have an immediate impact as they look to hang with the Flames. If he plays in a game for the club this postseason (which, again, is expected) then they'll burn the first year of his three-year, entry-level contract. "We are excited to have him join our team".
