Moldova would pull a consolation goal back in the dying stages when the ball rebounded off the post and fell to substitute Vladimir Ambros, who finished with aplomb although the damage had already been done.

World champions France proved too strong for Moldova after registering a 4-1 victory in their opening EURO 2020 qualifier on Friday night.

"The goal conceded does not take anything from our good game".

France got off to a slow start, but Paul Pogba flicked the ball over the Moldova defence and Griezmann volleyed it under the bar from point-blank range after 24 minutes.

Griezmann volleyed in the first after a clever one-two with Pogba before Raphael Varane headed home from a corner.

Giroud then moved to joint third on France's all-time top scorers' list, alongside David Trezeguet on 34 goals, after coolly volleying home Blaise Matuidi's cross in the 36th minute.

Oleg Reabciuk nearly handed the world champions a second when he volleyed Layvin Kurzawa's cross just wide of his own goal, but from the resulting corner France scored anyway as Varane's header from Griezmann's near-post corner could not be stopped by defender Ion Jardan at the back post. Mbappé got on the scoresheet three minutes from time after being teed up by Thomas Lemar. Les Bleus were really penning the hosts in.

France were awoken from their early slumber by Griezmann's emphatic finish, and it was from his corner that Varane added the second. Had Mbappe been sharper and Koselev not thwarted Pogba, Griezmann might have ended with a hat-trick of assists.
