Saint Mary's upsets Gonzaga for WCC title, earns NCAA tourney berth

The school has suffered in recent years by failing to win the WCC title and then being snubbed for a place in the NCAA tournament, but the Gonzaga win gives the team automatic selection.

Gonzaga previously dominated the conference in the regular season, posting a 16-0 record while winning by a WCC-record 27 points per game.

The Gaels locked down the perimeter, limiting the Zags to 2-of-17 shooting from 3-point territory.

Gonzaga, victor of the past six WCC titles, was expected to claim their seventh and be an NCAA Tournament No.1 seed but the loss could relegate their ranking.

Gonzaga went from the No. 1 team in the country to a school no longer guaranteed to be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in a span of 40 basketball minutes Tuesday night.

Two of those wins came against Saint Mary's: 66-55 in Moraga and 94-46 in Spokane.

The Bulldogs cruised into their 20th straight title game under coach Mark Few - and 22nd overall - by crushing Pepperdine 100-74 in Monday's semifinals. Gonzaga has 49 assists on 98 field goals (50 percent) over its past three outings while Saint Mary's has assists on 23 of 73 field goals (31.5 percent) during its past three games.

"Gonzaga likes to get out and run, they feed off energy", Ford said.

Syracuse: The Orange (19-12, 10-8 ACC) will play Pittsburgh on Wednesday in the ACC Tournament and if they can take care of business, would win their 20th game and be in good position to earn a bid.

The Zags also had a hard time containing Krebs. For the Gaels, Jordan Ford has averaged 21.4 points while Malik Fitts has put up 15.5 points and 7.7 rebounds.

Though St. Mary's led for the entire second half, the early going actually belonged to the Zags, who opened the game on a 9-2 run.

Final score: Saint Mary's 60, Gonzaga 47.

Saint Mary's played arguably its best game of the season at the best possible time. This group's tough. They're resilient, we were 3-4 to start the year and a lot of people didn't think we were good.

Any room to maneuver on the NCAA Tournament's bubble has probably become a little tighter.

Gonzaga was never able to speed the Gaels up and rev up their high-scoring offense, showing a weakness that could be exploited.
