Dortmund took control from then on, but they were unable to find a way past Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris who produced a couple fine saves at the midway point.

It was credit to Mauricio Pochettino's managerial alchemy, inspiring his players at half-time, encouraging them to go for the jugular more.

Asked about Spurs winning again without two of their key players, Pochettino said: "It's good because the expectation when people watch Tottenham is not only to win, it's to see a performance like the dream team of Barcelona with [Johan] Cruyff or Milan of Arrigo Sacchi".

Spurs did not manage a single shot on target in the first period of their round-of-16 clash against the Bundesliga leaders, but they took the lead through Son Heung-min moments after the break. Jan Vertonghen was enormous at left wing back, Christian Eriksen really grew into the game and the key man was Son Heung-min.

After watching his team tear Borussia Dortmund apart, Pochettino joked he would simply head to the dressing room for a shower next time Son helps himself to a goal.

Insisting his players deserved all the praise after emerging from a gruelling schedule with their best result of the season, Pochettino said: "I want to congratulate my players one more time".

"And with a little bit of luck because I think when you score - the confidence was a massive boost when Son scored". I think it's a massive victory for us.

"In fairness to people like, Dele, Christian, Sonny, they've been scoring a huge amount of goals at the top level in the Premier League for a good few seasons".

The game really opened up after the opening goal, but Dortmund were unable to mount any serious openings at goal as Spurs enjoyed a lion's share of the possesion.

Reflecting on the second-half improvement from Spurs, Pochettino said: "The first half was very hard".

"The start of the second half, we gave it away".

They were on the other end of the spectrum minutes later as Juan Foyth, starting in place of Kieran Trippier, lost the ball in his own box - with only the keeper to beat for Christian Pulisic, who failed to convert and let Mauricio Pochettino's side of the hook.

"And also it wasn't a situation where he left City and went straight into Dortmund's first team". I tried to get him to Arsenal. "You have phases like that when it's hard and things don't run as they should do".
