Paolo Lorenzi overcomes Tennys Sandgren in first round of New York Open

There were contrasting fortunes for Bernard Tomic and Tennys Sandgren at the New York Open.

"Those break points [at 1-2] were important because I felt like if he had have got that early and been up a break 3-1 it's a whole different story", Tomic told Tennis Atlantic. "I played pretty well and the courts and conditions suit me".

"Obviously losing the (Australian Open) first round to (Marin) Cilic was a tough draw".

"We've played a couple of times. I lost 7-6 in the fourth in Davis Cup", he said.

"But I have to go out there and try and play the way I did today". The final singles match on Monday's schedule features No. 7 seed Jordan Thompson of Australia taking on wild card and hometown favourite Noah Rubin.

Australian world No.87 Tomic made short work of Slovakian Lukas Lacko 6-4 6-2 in their opening-round encounter at the New York Open, setting up a clash with top seed John Isner. He has primarily competed on the ATP Challenger Tour over the past six months, but qualified for the main draw this year at ATP Tour events in Doha and Cordoba.

The world No.41 Tomljanovic will meet ninth-seeded German Julia Goerges in the first round.

Stosur was beaten 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 6-4 by Russian Anna Blinkova in the third round of qualifying.
