Missouri nurse accused of fatally poisoning husband to marry killer serving life sentence

After pleading guilty to second-degree murder, Claypool was sentenced to life in prison, but would become eligible for parole after serving 25 years.

Murray allegedly started a fire inside her Iberia home on December 11 and first responders found the body of Murray's husband, Joshua Murray, inside, cops said. His body was found after a fire at the couple's home.

A medical examiner's autopsy determined that Joshua Murray had died from antifreeze poisoning before the inferno destroyed the home.

It's a plot worthy of a soap opera: A Missouri jail nurse was charged with the murder of her husband in what police said was a bid to be with her inmate boyfriend, whom she met while he was incarcerated for killing an elderly lottery victor.

Police say Murray was a nurse at a correctional center and was having a relationship with an inmate.

Fire marshals determined that the blaze originated inside the master bedroom and that an accelerant was used to start the inferno, according to the Miller County Sheriff's Office. Amy Murray had taken her 11-year-old son and the family dogs to McDonald's at the time of the fire and then allegedly claimed the smoke was too heavy for her to go inside the house once she returned, according to a probable cause statement obtained by ABC News.

"During the phone calls, Amy Murray talks about not wanting to be around her husband, Joshua Murray, and was wanting a divorce from him", the probable cause statement.

Amy Murray remained jailed Monday on a $750,000 bond.

The victim, Donald Hardwick, had made headlines for winning a $1.7 million lottery prize in 1998.

Investigators said Claypool repeatedly stabbed Hardwick, whose wife later found him dead with a Bible on his chest.

Amy Murray apparently worked to try to get Claypool out of prison early, according to the news website.

Court documents revealed that Murray had recorded phone conversations with Claypool in which she stated that she did not want to be married to her husband anymore, Fox 22 reported.

In addition to the murder charge, Murray is also charged with armed criminal action. She's scheduled to appear in court on February 13.
