Before her acceptance speech was cut off, Best New Artist Grammy victor Dua Lipa shouted out her fellow female nominees this year, commenting that "I guess this year we really stepped up".

The unlikely duo brought their star power together to do a mashup of Aretha Franklin's "R-E-S-P-E-C-T", St. Vincent's "Masseduction", and Dua Lipa's "One Kiss".

Last year's Best New Artist victor was Alessia Cara, who presented Lipa with her award tonight. The remark was a clear reference to outgoing Recording Academy president Neil Portnow and his comments after the 2018 Grammys that women needed to "step up" in order to receive recognition in the future.

"I know i'm not there tonight (trust, i tried and still truly wished it had worked out tbh) and i know i said i try not to put too much weight into these things. but f**k. this is wild and attractive. thank you so much". In her speech, Lipa said, "I am honored to be nominated alongside so many female artists this year - I guess we stepped up".

You'll recall that past year that, after female artists failed to earn much recognition at the 2018 Grammys, Portnow said that women needed to step up.
