Rain, hail delays final round at Pebble Beach

Phil Mickelson had everything go his way Sunday in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The final round earlier had been delayed for one hour because of rain.

"It's nice to be playing well and to be on a roll", Mickelson said. Trailing Casey by three shots, Lefty did most everything right as he made six birdies in the 16 holes he finished and didn't put a bogey on his card.

"We've got two tough holes left and I don't want to jump the gun and get past that", Mickelson said.

Mickelson stood at 18 under through 70 holes and was three shots clear of Paul Casey and Scott Stallings.

Play has just resumed at the final round of the US PGA Tour's Pebble Beach Pro Am after being suspended for just over two hours due to a hail storm. Kessler Karain, Patrick Reed's caddie, made a hail angel on the 14 fairway. It was known as "Crosby weather" when Bing Crosby was the tournament host for the better part of a half-century. Upon their return, a glorious sun bathed the course in relative warmth.

Mickelson also won on a Monday - in August. And if he wins, it will be his 14 PGA Tour title in California, which would tie him with Tiger Woods and Billy Casper.

Casey has never won in three previous times he had a 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour, all of them by two shots or more, and he was holding his own against the relentless pursuit of Mickelson, who missed three straight birdie putts from the 12-foot range by the slimmest margins.

A victory also would validate all the work Mickelson has done to stave off the onslaught of age and remain relevant in the game he loves. He had a biomechanics study done and looked at the kinematic sequence of his swing to pinpoint his strengths and weaknesses.

"There's still a glimmer", said Casey, who was even-par Sunday before play was halted. Casey had great par saves, and then Mickelson took off. After hiring a nutritionist, he is staunchly adhering to a new diet, which is as tough as a two-way breaking putt at Augusta National for a man who rarely said no to any food offering. And obviously I need a mistake.

Hail quickly covered the greens at the Pebble Beach course.

"Phil's put together a spectacular round of golf, 6 under, no dropped shots".
