Despite the initial hesitation from fans, Aladdin producer Dan Lin insisted Smith's take on the character would, in fact, be blue in the movie.

Disney released a new look at its live-action Aladdinmovie during the 61st Annual GRAMMY Awards on Sunday. The film stars Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Naomi Scott (Jasmine), Will Smith (the Genie), Billy Magnussen (Prince Anders), Nasim Pedrad (Dalia), Marwan Kenzari (Jafar), Numan Acar (Hakim), and Navid Negahban (Sultan).

But the best bit comes right at the end as Aladdin, with Apu and a pixel-perfect CGI Magic Carpet right behind, rubs the magic lamp for the first time, unveiling the big lovely blue Smith. They were forced to speak up after an Entertainment Weekly cover story in December showed a pre-CGI Smith, which prompted Twitter blowback.

The blueness of the genie seems to sit in opposition to previous studio-released looks of Smith in full genie getup, which feature a decidedly less-blue skin tone. Smith even tried to preempt criticism in an Instagram post. And I say this as someone who's been an ardent defender of Ritchie's last couple of fun-filled blockbusters. "There hasn't been a lot of that hip-hop flavor in Disney history".

Directed by Guy Ritchie, the man behind 2009's Sherlock Holmes, Aladdin hits theaters on May 24.
