The shooting happened at the Fashion Place mall in Murray, a spokesperson for the Murray Police Department told ABC News.

Two people in their early 20s were shot at about 1.30pm (local time) near the southeast entrance to the Fashion Place mall in Murray in the U.S. state of Utah, a suburb south of Salt Lake City, said Murray Police Officer Kenny Bass. Kenny Bass said of the suspects, Fox13 reported. He says the victims were a man and woman in their early 20s.

Three suspects fled the scene and are still on the run, Bass said. The man is in critical condition and the woman in serious condition.

"We do not know their identities, we have descriptions of them", Murray Police Det.

The mall said in a tweet it was "very saddened by the incident" and grateful for the actions of security and Murray police. This is a developing investigation and we are providing whatever aide necessary to law enforcement. "The shopping center is now closed", the mall told Fox13.

Police told the news outlet that the shooting may be gang-related. "They are now still outstanding".

The victims were shot outside the mall on the east side. He said it didn't appear to be an "active shooter" situation.

Two people were wounded.

Catrina Ramos said she was with her four children in Claire's getting her daughter's ears pierced when she heard a "pop" sound. Like others at the mall she posted on social media about the shooting, but then she returned to the mall to talk to reporters.

Abbigail Loveridge, an employee at the Attic Salt store, heard gunshots and a fire alarm.

Multiple agencies responded to the shooting including from West Jordan, Salt Lake City, Herriman, Sandy and others, according to KSL Newsradio's Kira Hoffemeyer.

"We saw cops come in from everywhere", Loren Okuly, who was in the parking lot at the time of the shooting, told KSL.

Additional details regarding the nature of the incident were not available at the time of this report. He also mentioned having seen police running towards Red Rock Brewing Company holding assault rifles.
