With Tottenham keen to hold on to Mauricio Pochettino, Manchester United are ready to make a move for Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone as their next permanent boss.

And according to Mirror, Simeone is one of the potential candidates in United's shortlist of managers.

The 48-year-old has closed the gap on Spanish rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona since arriving at the club seven years ago.

The 48-year-old is now in talks with Atletico over a contract extension and only has 18 months to run on his current deal, making him considerably easier to prise away than Pochettino.

The same article states that Manchester United have already made contact with Simeone through intermediaries to assess his current situation at los Rojiblancos and the Argentinian's interest in taking over at Manchester United.

The Daily Mirror adds that Tottenham boss Pochettino remains their first choice but the 20-time English champions are eager to look at other options should Simeone's former Argentina team-mate prove unwilling to turn his back on Spurs.

Manchester United appointed their former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their interim manager last month.

The Red Devils sacked Jose Mourinho in December after making their worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign.
