The electric auto is a sleek, sexy crossover SUV with a design clearly cribbed from the equally stunning Escala concept vehicle shown in 2016, and while it doesn't have a name yet the development is being fast-tracked around a new modular EV platform General Motors only announced on Friday.

In a shocking turn of events (pun intended), Cadillac revealed the design of its first electric vehicle during Sunday night's preview showing of the new 2020 XT6 crossover SUV, whose formal debut took place Monday at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

General Motors had recently revealed that its electrification push would be led by the luxury brand Cadillac. "It joins the all-new XT4, which has soared to the top spot in its segment, our global best-selling XT5 and the iconic Escalade to accelerate the brand's global growth, with a spirit that is uniquely Cadillac". This will be the first model derived from GM's future EV platform.

The Cadillac EV's name and additional details will be revealed closer to launch.

Steve Carlisle, President of Cadillac said, "Cadillac's EV will hit the heart of the crossover market and meet the needs of customers around the world".

The most advanced components within this platform are the drive units and battery cells, both of which are being designed for maximum usability throughout GM vehicle lineups in different countries. The electric Caddy crossover will be just the first in a range of vehicles to make use of the platform, which has been created to accommodate front-, rear- or all-wheel drive configurations.

The new SUV EV will take on the likes of Tesla's own electric SUV, the Model X.
