A 16-year-old from NSW has died after being buried under an avalanche in Austria.

Max Meyer, 16, was on the mock trial and robotics team at International Grammar School.

He said: "We have seen some significant and disruptive snowfall across parts of Germany and Austria in recent days and we still have red warnings across southeastern parts of Germany and for much of Austria for further snow". The family, a German man and Australian woman and their children, live in Australia.

An Australian teenager is dead after being trapped under six feet of snow in an avalanche that tragically ended a family holiday to the Austrian Alps in St. Anton am Arlberg, on January 10. At least 17 people have died in weather-related events over the past week.

Several railway lines in the Alps were closed because of the snow, lorries and cars got stuck for hours on a highway in south-western Germany.

The Weather Channel reported that more light snow was expected over south-east Europe on Friday with Greece to western Turkey remaining unsettled under low pressure with a mixture of rain and snow.

However, according to the publication, Elisabeth Koestinger, the Austrian minister responsible for tourism, said that "in most skiing areas, there is no reason for concern at present if people keep to the rules and don't leave the secured slopes". BBC Weather forecaster Alina Jenkins said heavy snow hit Germany, Austria, Turkey and the Balkans on Thursday (10 January). The Svalbard archipelago is 800 kilometres north of Norway's mainland.

The family was believed to be from NSW, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
