I am a positive guy.

Speaking with CNN, he said he feels for Murray who's hand has been forced by persistent back and hip injuries.

The annual grass court championship in London is seen by most as the flagship tournament on the tennis calendar and, much like Murray, Federer sees the it as an ideal stage for him to step down when the time comes.

Roger Federer said Sunday he was shocked that tennis was to lose "legend" Andy Murray this year and the Scot should be "incredibly proud" of all he had achieved.

He was 35 and coming off a long injury lay-off when he revived his career with an Australian Open title in 2017. We will miss him.

"It seems like he had not a very long career because today players are playing that long". We are not 20 any more.

"When you are going on court every day without the clear goal because you can not move well, you have pain, then is a moment to take a decision", Nadal said of Murray's decision.

Despite that, Nadal is leaving no stone unturned in Melbourne and brings a remodelled serve aimed at generating more pace and, hopefully, shortening points.

Murray was the first British man to win Wimbledon in 77 years and will be remembered for battling his way to world number one in 2016 during a golden era for men's tennis alongside Federer, Djokovic and Nadal. That title belongs to Novak Djokovic, who barnstormed his way through the second half of 2018, winning Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

However, the 32-year-old Spaniard declared himself ready to throw himself into a 14th campaign in Melbourne, starting with a first round match against Australian wildcard James Duckworth. Federer has a night match against Denis Istomin on the same center court.

Murray is scheduled to play No. 22-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut on Monday at Melbourne Arena, the third of the show courts.

Nadal recalled a younger Murray - "a little bit a bad boy" - in the under-13s and 14s, but was full of praise for how his Scottish friend had evolved.

"At the end of the day you appreciate a lot your rivals because you shared lot of important moments in our lives", he said. "I have good feelings in terms of the surgery that I have in the foot. That's impossible to forget".
