As a sales director in Huawei's enterprise division, Wang handled sales of technology to government customers, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

Earlier, Poland's state television reported that one of the directors of the Polish division of China's telecom giant Huawei, as well as a former high-ranking employee of the Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW), were arrested on suspicion of spying for China.

An official at the Chinese Embassy in Warsaw says China attaches "great importance to the detention" of a Chinese citizen in Poland who has been detained and charged with espionage and that a representative of the embassy has met with officials at Poland's Foreign Ministry to discuss the case.

But a US dispute with China over its ban on Huawei is spilling over to Europe, the company's biggest foreign market. Last year, Huawei helped Orange Polska to roll out its next-generation 5G mobile networks in the country. They are well ahead of Sweden's Ericsson, Finland's Nokia and South Korea's Samsung, analysts say.

Economic factors aside, the arrest of Wang is, in fact, something those who understand the power of 5G have expressed concern about: that the technology will be used as an espionage tool by Beijing. That is why Europe wants to deploy it as quickly as possible.

The US has warned for nearly a year that Huawei, a Chinese tech giant, might be partnering with Beijing's intelligence agencies.

American and other Western security experts, including three former heads of Canadian spy agencies, have raised concerns that Huawei could be asked by Beijing to incorporate backdoors into their equipment for spying or sabotage goal.

Huawei has for months been publicly criticized and blacklisted by Western countries, accused of acting as a proxy for China's security apparatus.

To add to the confusion, large operators could reject Huawei equipment in some of their markets, but not in others. Huawei said there was no evidence of any wrongdoing.

Germany's Deutsche Telekom announced a deal with Huawei for its future 5G network in Poland, but hasn't said what it will do in Germany itself.
