He now joins us on the line for more, as the DRC's Martin fayulu, goes to the concourt over election results.

Provisional results indicated candidates from the pro-Kabila FCC coalition secured up to 288 of the 485 seats so far declared, putting them in control of parliament for the next five years.

DRC is a giant, straddling central Africa over an area the size of continental western Europe.

Fayulu's coalition asserts he won 61 per cent of the vote according to the Catholic Church's 40,000 election observers across the country.

Tshisekedi's camp denies that there was any deal with Kabila and says meetings it held with the president's representatives after the election were meant exclusively to ensure a peaceful transfer of power.

In Kinshasa, the Catholic Church openly disputed the election result, saying it "does not correspond with the data collected by our observer mission from polling stations and counting centres".

Fayulu accuses outgoing President Joseph Kabila of making a backroom deal with the declared victor, opposition leader Felix Tshisekedi.

"My lawyers, in order to avoid any surprises, chose to deposit the appeal files yesterday Friday 11th at 3:30 p.m.at the constitutional court".

"CENCO's word on the election results will therefore be heeded by many Congolese, who suspect the vote remains rigged".

Most leaders issued statements calling for any disputes to be resolved peacefully, but notably lacking any congratulations for Tshisekedi.

Competing appeals in the dispute were pitched to the UN Security Council on Friday.

Rich in minerals but mired in poverty, the country has suffered two major wars in the past 22 years, as well as bloodshed in elections in 2006 and 2011 that saw Kabila returned to office.

Analysts said they believed Mr Kabila, 47, had sought to avoid the expected backlash and worldwide condemnation that would have followed had Mr Shadary - the candidate he publicly supported - been declared victor.

Some commentators suggested Mr Kabila would have sought immunity from prosecution for his iron-fisted 18-year rule, and protection from assets seizure in return for offering his support.

Thursday's pre-dawn announcement brought thousands of Tshisekedi supporters onto the streets in celebration, while others who had backed Fayulu came out to protest. The previous tally was five dead.

CENI has still to announce the result of legislative elections which also took place on December 30, with more than 15,000 candidates in the running.

The outgoing National Assembly, which took power in 2011, is now dominated by Kabila supporters who, even ahead of the announcement, were already claiming to have won a majority.

Seventeen police were injured, he said, denying earlier reports of police fatalities.
