The Foreign Secretary appealed to MPs to come together behind a Withdrawal Agreement which is "not perfect" but "broadly delivers Brexit".

A senior and well-placed source predicted there would also be "furious lobbying of MPs", with 10-15,000 voters being encouraged by People's Vote campaigners to target MPs in 100 key seats, including key Tories, Labour waverers and potential opposition supporters of May's deal, like Caroline Flint and Gareth Snell.

The vote had been scheduled to take place in December but was called off at the last minute by the prime minister, who was facing nearly certain defeat.

The MP stressed that around half of the 20 Tory rebels who helped defeat the government last week are "very against another referendum, Sir Oliver Letwin types, Nick Boles and so on" and so it was hard to see a majority for a People's Vote.

"I'm in a leave constituency, but I would do what's right". We have been shown, in the starkest terms yet, that there are plenty of people who want to thwart Brexit. "I just can't see how it happens with that configuration of Parliament". And its emergence should unite those of us who voted Leave in our determination to get Brexit over the line. The only deal we have is the withdrawal agreement.

Blocking Brexit could "open the door" to "extremist" populist political forces in the United Kingdom, and the millions who voted to Leave the European Union would feel "cheated", a Cabinet minister has warned.

"This "deal" holds us back from reaping the benefits of Brexit, while relinquishing any benefits of the EU. Instead of embarking on another fruitless effort of renegotiation, it is time to hand this crucial decision back to the people".

British Prime Minister Theresa May has warned lawmakers that failure to back her plan to leave the European Union would be catastrophic for Britain, in a plea for support two days ahead of a vote in parliament that she is expected to lose.

He told Radio 4's Today programme: "The EU has agreed it's temporary, so if we can actually explain to people why it's temporary and if those assurances can be legally binding so that people really believe we won't be trapped in the customs union indefinitely then I do believe we can get this deal through".

The Prime Minister faced calls from a predecessor, Sir John Major, to revoke Article 50 to halt Brexit - as he warned it would be "morally reprehensible" to crash out without a deal. I will be speaking against this "deal" and can not support it in the upcoming vote. But many also dislike May's agreement, which has displeased both sides of Britain's Brexit divide. "If we are not crashing out and we are not going for the PM's deal, I can not believe that article 50 does not have to be extended", said one of those involved.
