This isn't a selective hearing joke - Chen, from Xiamen in China, woke up one day and she was unable to hear her boyfriend when he spoke - or any men, as it turned out.

The Daily Mail reports that one night, Chen went to bed after feeling nauseated and experiencing ringing in her ears.

In a freaky situation, a Chinese woman has been diagnosed with a type of hearing loss in which she is unable to hear the voices of men and can only higher frequency tones of other females.

Dr. Lin Xiaoqing, a specialist at Qianpu Hospital, diagnosed Ms. Chen with a rare form of low-frequency hearing damage known as reverse-slope hearing loss.

This condition hinders Chen's ability to hear low frequency sounds, such as the average grown man's voice.

Doctors believe that Ms. Chen's particular condition may have been brought on by stress and a severe lack of sleep. The good news is, just like Gibson and Henson, she is expected to make a full recovery.

Instead, the vast majority of people who have some type of hearing loss have what is called ski-slope hearing loss. This explains why hearing loss more often affects our ability to hear higher-pitched sounds than lower-pitched ones, she said.

High-frequency hearing loss is much more common and generally means people struggle to, or can't hear the voices of women and children. In reverse-sloping hearing loss, the shape of the audiogram runs in the opposite direction. Autoimmune disorders that affect the inner ear - which are thought to occur in about 1 percent of the US population - may also be a cause of RSHL, Clark said. This can put sufferers in danger, as they may not hear noises like oncoming cars. It can also be caused by changes in the pressure of the fluid in the inner ear, endolymph, which itself can be the result of spinal or general anesthesia, intracranial hypertension, and a perilymphatic fistula. Sudden hearing loss, Ménière's disease and viral infection are also identified as causes of RSHL.
