2020 Europe Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington says Rory McIlroy is still fully committed to European Golf and is an "unofficial playing captain" in the team room.

The ones who were unable to deliver away wins included Nick Faldo, who for all his time as the world's top golfer failed to find the right buttons to press in the locker-rooms.

"I want to hopefully leave the European Tour and Ryder Cup in a better place after two years".

"I realize it's good timing in my career, but I always realize it's probably the best setting for the team, going to the US having me the captain at this time".

"I think the standard of golf on the European Tour and the players we have on tour is going to ensure that".

Paul McGinley successfully captained Europe at Gleneagles in 2012, while Darren Clarke lost out on American soil at Hazeltine in 2014.

The three-time major victor is a veteran of six matches against the United States, winning on four occasions between 1999 and 2010. Still to sign up for the European Tour in 2019, it is possible he would join the qualifying process late. The 2010 Ryder Cup, The Celtic Manor Resort, City of Newport, Wales.

Clarke was always fighting a losing battle as the Americans regrouped under the second coming of Davis Love III to wrest back the cup into their possession.

And Harrington seemingly had no naysayers among the players.

"I'm getting some stats done at the moment on whether to go for three or four", he told BBC Sport. "It is very important that I have that feeling of support because I have to be a confident captain as much as need 12 confident players".

"It will be an away match", Harrington warned.

"I'm stereotyped that I'd be 100 percent down that road but I'm certainly 50 percent down the road of looking at stats and things like that", Harrington said. "It's a different league, a different level". "I'm thrilled but it's not something I take on without a certain amount of trepidation". "It's something I will take on over the next 18 months". Europe has harvested 11 of the 20 events.

"I know there are words there, but the actions nowhere near match up". They get to go out there and get an opportunity to be heroes, to be loved. "I want to be a winning captain".

Whistling Straits is certainly a links-style course, with fairways sitting among sandy waste areas on the banks of Lake Michigan.

"Home advantage is a huge part of it, there's no doubt about it, " Harrington said.

Harrington added: "It is a European-style golf course, so let's hope we are somewhat on an even playing field". "But no one knows yet for sure". I know it's an uphill struggle to beat the U.S.in the USA but these are good golf courses.

Harrington was the natural choice to succeed Thomas Bjorn as European golf's next leader.

The U.S.is expected to name its 2020 captain sometime this spring.
