A Paris police spokesperson said firefighters were at the scene of the blast on Saturday morning at the bakery on Rue Trevise in the 9th arrondissement of north-central Paris.

The explosion is thought to have been caused by a gas leak in a bakery, according to French journalist Catherine Fournier. Witnesses described on French television the overwhelmingly sound of the blast and people trapped inside nearby buildings.

An explosion has rocked central Paris, with dozens of people injured, historic buildings damaged and cars alight. A Paris spokeswoman told CNN there are victims, adding it is too early to say how many.

"Cars are overturned. glass broken everywhere".

Firefighters pulled injured victims out of windows and evacuated residents.

Paris police are on high alert on a ninth consecutive Saturday of yellow vest protests, with large parts of the city centre blocked off by riot police.
