According to a report by ESPN, Manchester United are identifying alternatives to top target Kalidou Koulibaly in their bid to strengthen their defence.

The same story says that Manchester United are keen on signing a new central defender this month, with Inter Milan's Milan Skriniar, AC Milan's Alessio Romagnoli and Leicester City's Harry Maguire also on their radar. His exploits have certainly caught the eye at some of the biggest clubs in the country, with Manchester United being one of his biggest admirers, and long-term suitors.

According to ESPN FC, the Red Devils had hoped that Napoli's exit from the Champions League would help them land Koulibaly this month, but the 20-time English champions are now prepared to wait until the summer to land the Senegal global.

However, the Serie A side have so far refused to negotiate and United now believe a deal in the summer is more likely.

The first player Manchester United may be signing under their caretaker manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been revealed.

However, that has not appeared to deter United and reports on Tuesday claimed the club had renewed attempts to land the centre-half and were indeed ready to test Napoli's resolve to keep a player who only signed a new five-year deal at the club in September.

Privately, United have refused to rule out making a signing in January but accept it is a hard window to buy the players they want. "This new concept will allow them to get closer to the club they love".
