Kevin Fret, who was regarded as the first openly gay artist within the Latin trap music genre, was shot and killed in San Juan, Puerto Rico in the early hours of Thursday, Jan. 10.

Rapper and LGBT activist Kevin Fret has been shot dead in Puerto Rico.

It's been reported that Kevin was on his motorcycle when he was shot at around 5:30am local time.

A rising star within the Latin music community has passed away at the age of 24.

Fret's manager Eduardo Rodriguez confirmed his death, saying in a statement: 'Kevin was an artistic soul, a big-hearted dreamer. "This violence must stop", Rodriguez said.

Fret first began his rise with the 2018 single "Soy Asi", as well as the track "Diferente" with Mike Duran, also from past year.

"We must all unite in these hard times, and ask for much peace for our beloved Puerto Rico", the statement further read.

'[Now I see] young gay guys or young lesbians that are looking at me now like a role model, like wow, if he did it, and he don't care what anybody else has to say, I can do it'.

His death brings the number of murders in Puerto Rico this year to 22, police said.
