Mrs Kramp-Karrenbauer, previously the CDU's general-secretary, faces the hard task of uniting the divided party after a series of bad election results.

Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, a close ally of Angela Merkel, won a tight race to succeed her as party leader Friday, seeing off a longtime rival of the German chancellor.

Merkel also had a message for President Donald Trump, stating that her party had to show its strengths in an age of "growing renunciation of multilateralism" and in times of "reducing global cooperation to the principles of deal-making". "But while it seems likely that she will broadly attempt to keep the CDU on a centrist line, she should not be mistaken as a one-to-one copy of Merkel", Sparding said "It seems likely that she will move the party slightly to the right, especially on socio-cultural issues". The delegates elected Kramp-Karrenbauer, 56, in the second round of balloting Friday at the party conference in Hamburg.

Kramp-Karrenbauer's trump card is her record as former state premier in Saarland, where she led a broad coalition with the Greens and pro-business Free Democrats - alliance-building skills useful in Germany's fractured political landscape.

Merkel, however, recalled that the CDU was in a deep crisis when she took over in 2000, mired in a party financing scandal surrounding ex-Chancellor Helmut Kohl.

Merkel, 64, had earlier mounted a staunch defense of her moderate course since becoming chancellor in 2005. They were said to be reasonably close, and the lack of communication between the two raised eyebrows at the time.

The protegee's win will come as a relief to Merkel, whose chances of staying on as chancellor until 2021 partly hinge on how well she gets on with the new CDU chair.

"AKK", as some Germans affectionately call her to avoid stumbling over her name, was Merkel's preferred candidate, at least according to many German media and analysts because the chancellor never publicly endorsed anyone.

Kramp-Karrenbauer is the favorite to run for chancellor in the next election, though that isn't automatic.

Her task now is to improve the standing of the CDU, fight to win back voters on the left and the right and work with Mrs Merkel closely.

Merkel said in October she would step down as party chief but remain chancellor, an effort to manage her exit after a series of setbacks since her divisive decision in 2015 to keep German borders open to refugees fleeing war in the Middle East.

The vote means one of the first challenges AKK will have to deal with is party unity, as many in the party feel a clear break with Merkel and a right turn would help the centre-right party regain some of the votes gradually lost under Merkel's long leadership. He won 157 votes.

"We are facing a turning point and need a breakthrough for the next years".

'We kept a cool head, ' she said. "I have always wanted to do my government and party jobs with dignity, and one day to leave them with dignity. now it is time to open a new chapter".

"In times like these, we will defend our liberal views, our way of life, both at home and overseas", Merkel told deputies according to Reuters.

The delegates rose and delivered a lengthy ovation to their long-time leader, with some holding up signs that simply said: "Thanks, boss".
