Filip Benkovic had a goal ruled out by Kevin Clancy for an infringement and Leigh Griffiths saw a penalty saved by Mark Gillespie as Celtic failed to make their dominance in possession count.

The champions were heading back to the top of the Ladbrokes Premiership until Danny Johnson struck from a hard angle in the 88th minute to earn Motherwell a 1-1 draw.

Johnson's late strike ensured Kilmarnock replaced Rangers at the top of the table and leaves some Celtic players wondering when their next chance will come.

Elsewhere, a controversial second-half penalty from St Johnstone winger Matthew Kennedy denied Hearts a first victory in seven games in a stormy tussle at McDiarmid Park.

"I won't sleep very well tonight", he said.

"Normally after a night take game it's three o'clock in the morning - if I can get to sleep before that I'll be happy".

"But from our perspective it's a poor goal to lose".

The Hoops trail Kilmarnock by a point, but have two games in hand, while Motherwell stay ninth.

"We are very hungry to sustain this period of our game and what we are trying to win".

"I think we deserved it and put pressure on them towards the end".

An equaliser still looked unlikely but Johnson made the most of a half-chance after the ball broke to him just inside the left edge of the box and drilled the ball just inside the far post.

"It's good for a manager to see", said Rodgers, "because players will knock and ask about why they are not playing and it's good for me to see a game like that".

An additional novelty was witnessed as the proceedings moved into the final 20 minutes as Motherwell subbed their substitute, with Main coming on for Livingstone, a welcome token of ambition from Stephen Robinson.

"When you play against Celtic you've got to be disciplined and the players did what we tried to do to the letter".

'And give the ball to Danny in the box and he scores goals.
