REPORT Cardinals Trade For Paul Goldschmidt By Aldo Soto- Dec 5 2018 1820
The Cardinals are in talks to acquire the Arizona Diamondbacks slugger via trade, but the Houston Astros also are in the running for his services, USA TODAY's Bob Nightengale reported Wednesday.
The Cardinals were able to acquire Goldschmidt without much disruption to their major league roster, shipping right-hander Luke Weaver, catcher Carson Kelly, minor league infielder Andy Young and a competitive balance round draft pick to Arizona. He hit.290 with 33 home runs and 83 RBIs last season and has often finished high in the NL MVP voting.
He has compiled a career.297 batting average, 209 home runs, and 710 RBI. Goldschmidt has a $14.5 million salary next year, receives a $1 million assignment bonus for the trade and will be eligible for free agency after next season.
Goldschmidt, 31, is the only NL player to be an All-Star each of the past six seasons - only Mike Trout and Salvador Pérez in the American League have done the same - and that's just the start of his hardware.
The St. Louis Cardinals reportedly are certain Paul Goldschmidt will love life in the Gateway to the West.
