The list, which names three posthumous recipients, includes sports and entertainment legends such as Babe Ruth and Elvis Presley as well as political and charitable luminaries such as philanthropist Miriam Adelson, Utah Republican Sen.

Donald Trump today announced he was giving the nation's highest civilian honor, the presidential medal of freedom, to eight people, including Elvis Presley and Babe Ruth posthumously, as well as Senator Orrin Hatch, Judge Allan Page and- Miriam Adelson, the doctor wife of Sheldon Adelson.

Adelson founded two research centers fighting against substance abuse, in addition to the Adelson Medical Research Foundation.

He has since been a major driver of Trump administration middle-eastern policy, including the switch of the United States embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem earlier this year, the abandonment of the Iran deal and the installation of the hawkish John Bolton as Trump's third national security adviser.

Hatch "sponsored more bills that have become law than any other living member of Congress", the White House said in a statement.

The White House also lauded the accomplishments of Hatch, one of the longest-serving senators in USA history, citing his four decades of legislative accomplishments and his leadership on judicial confirmations.

The last Medal of Freedom ceremony took place on November 22, 2016, when President Barack Obama honored 21 individuals including Robert De Niro, Diana Ross, Ellen DeGeneres, Tom Hanks, Lorne Michaels, Newton Minow, Robert Redford, Vin Scully, Bruce Springsteen and Cicely Tyson.
