The 29-year-old, who is joining Renault for next season, started the previous race in Mexico on pole position before suffering his eighth retirement of the season, twice as many as team mate Max Verstappen.

Verstappen's father Jos said last week that losing pole was made even worse for Max because he had to watch team-mate Ricciardo celebrate.

Max Verstappen says Red Bull is closer than it expected to the front of the field at the Brazilian Grand Prix despite hitting trouble during FP2.

Jos did go on to explain that Danny Ric's jubilation inspired his son to take the win in the Grand Prix on Sunday, and Ricciardo was asked about whether he thought his celebrations were too over the top, considering he had just snatched a first-ever pole position from his young teammate.

Verstappen, 21, was seen moping around after the race after missing yet another opportunity to become the youngest driver in history to hold pole. "At the time I felt like I meant it but deep down I didn't", he told Sky.

"I was angry and upset". I think anyone missing their first pole by such a small margin is going to be p*ssed. "That is the competitor in me", the Australian continued.

The likeable Aussie has had woeful luck with his Renault power unit in the back of his Red Bull, which is ironic after his decision to leave the successful Milton Keynes outfit to join Enstone-based Renault factory Formula One team. We have some things to improve but I am quite confident that we can improve them anyway, so we will see. I'm happy with the long runs as well ...

"I was obviously super happy because it's been a tough year, and I think I was the underdog in that fight for pole, so to do it, I was obviously pretty stoked". From his point of view, he was the favorite all weekend, topping all the sessions, and to get pipped by your teammate by two hundredths, it is going to piss you off. "So we don't really want to put him in that position".

"I was mainly very angry because of the problems I've had with my engine during qualifying and then you know, that weekend I was clearly the fastest but just for 75 seconds I wasn't". I was literally pissed off.

"Then of course every little thing which comes with it makes me even more angrier, I could literally". I could literally do some damage if somebody would say something wrong to me after qualifying. "Every little thing makes it even worse".

Ricciardo was first out of the garages in Friday's practice at Interlagos, waiting for several minutes at the end of the pits for the session to start.
