Australia's Matt Jones has made an impressive start to the PGA Tour's Mayakoba Classic at Playa del Carmen in Mexico, the 38 year old former Sydneysider, who only recently regained his PGA Tour status via the Web.Com Tour Finals, opening with a round of 65 to be in a share of 4th place and just one behind a three way tie for the lead. Nick Taylor (68) of Abbotsford was tied for 42nd, Adam Svensson (70) of Surrey, B.C., was tied for 77th, Corey Conners (72) of Listowel, Ont., was in a group tied for 109th, Mackenzie Hughes (73) of Dundas, Ont., was tied for 119th and Roger Sloan (75) of Merritt, B.C., was tied for 126th.

Hickok also played golf at the University of Texas and lived with Spieth in Dallas until a few months ago, when all the roommates had to find other arrangements as Spieth prepares for his marriage to Annie Verret.

"If you're not driving it well, this course is extremely hard", said the seven-times PGA Tour victor.

Gary Woodland and Bud Cauley are part of the large group of players a shot off the lead, while Fowler is a further shot back after mixing six birdies and a bogey in an opening-round 66.

His wife, Sybi, also got in on the act. With his normal caddie already holding a scheduling conflict, Kuchar instead hired a local caddie to fill the void.

"She knows the deal of keeping up and staying out of the way and I knew Zach would be happy to see a friendly face to take over the bag".

Sybi Kuchar joined Matt Kuchar on the course on Thursday, caddying for Zach Johnson as her husband enjoyed a fine round.

"I didn't talk too much to Damon, but you could tell it was heat fatigue, heat exhaustion", Kuchar later told reporters.
