"There's no active shooter", said Pender County Emergency Management Director Tom Collins, reported the StarNews in Wilmington.

The active shooter situation at Topsail High School was the result of malfunctioning equipment, Pender County officials now confirm.

WRAL reports there was a heavy law enforcement presence at the school, which is located at 245 N. Saint Johns Church Road in Hampstead, when the reports of an active shooter first surfaced.

He said deputies did find an HVAC unit that was malfunctioning and making sounds similar to gunshots.

Earlier this morning, a parent told WWAY he received a call from the school district this morning that all schools on the eastern side of the county are on lockdown. "Pender County Schools is taking all precautions to ensure the safety of students and staff".

It shares a campus with a middle school and an elementary school.

Authorities in North Carolina have responded to reports of an active shooter at a high school.

According to the school website, school begins at 8:30 a.m.

James Rowell with the Pender County Sheriff's Office confirmed there were no reports of injuries Friday.

Topsail High School is about 105 miles southeast of Raleigh.
