Earlier, in the first innings, Ross Taylor and Tom Latham scored fighting half centuries to lift New Zealand to a challenging total of 266 with nine wickets lost.

Only Danny Morrison and Shane Bond had previously taken hat-tricks in the one-day format for the Kiwis.

During the Pakistan innings, Shadab Khan had claimed three wickets in four deliveries but Boult topped that with a hat-trick.

Boult had missed the Twenty20 global series to attend the birth of his first child but it didn't take long for him to announce his arrival in the ODI series.

Ardent Pakistan fans had to dig a little deeper for optimism when a double strike ended the 63-run fourth-wicket partnership, as Pakistan fell to 73/5.

Grandhomme took 2 for 40 while Lockie Ferguson finished with 3 for 36.

"New Zealand have good new ball bowlers and early wickets pushed us too much".

However, once Pakistan skipper Sarfraz dragged a Colin de Grandhomme delivery onto his stumps New Zealand were nearly home and dry.

Paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi, playing only his fourth one-day worldwide, had jolted New Zealand at the start with the wickets of George Worker (one) and Colin Munro (29).

The early inroads shackled the New Zealand batsmen in the middle overs, but Kane Williamson and Taylor kept the scorecard ticking along before the former picked out short midwicket off a Shadab long hop.

Shadab dismissed Kane Williamson for 27 before Taylor and Latham joined at 78-3.

"His job is to do batting and if he concentrates on that, it's better".

Another big wicket followed when Taylor was bowled by Imad the next over, with New Zealand's mid-to-lower order all but wiped out.

He dismissed Latham leg-before and did the same to Henry Nicholls (nought) the very next ball, before removing De Grandhomme two balls later when he edged to first slip without scoring.

That helped New Zealand add 50 runs in the last five overs.

Taylor appeared to accuse veteran Pakistan spinner Mohammad Hafeez of an illegal bowling action during the first innings of the clash in Abu Dhabi.
