"We are confident that the agreement with Wynnchurch achieves all of those goals", Corey Wendland, chief financial officer, said in the statement. "We look forward to serving our guests the pizza and grilled sandwiches they have come to love over many decades".

FOX61 reached out to the Papa Gino's locations in Vernon, Windsor Locks and Waterford and heard a voice recording saying the location was permanently closed. As of Sunday, its website only listed 97 locations. A comparison indicates the company eliminated four of its 10 locations in Rhode Island and 37 of its 115 locations in Massachusetts. When you pull up to the Papa Gino's on Reservoir Avenue in Cranston, there is now a sign taped up reading, "This location is now closed".

The closings were sudden, even to Papa Gino's employees. "I was told to reapply to other locations".

WBZ also talked with a blindsided employee in Mansfield.

The release said the proposed sale will "significantly strengthen the chains' financial resources, allowing PGHC to remodel and modernize their 141 company-owned restaurants in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and CT; open additional restaurants throughout New England; and enhance its online ordering capabilities at all restaurants". In 1968, it changed its name, and began expanding around Boston and beyond.

In a September 21 press release, Bunker Hill Capital, a Boston private equity investor, said it exited from PGHC Holdings, the parent company of Papa Gino's and D'Angelo.

D'Angelo Grilled Sandwiches was founded as Ma Riva's Sub Shop in Dedham in 1967. The sit-down pizzerias hosted many a pizza-fueled birthday party, and some schoolchildren-like myself at Berlin Memorial School-grew up eating the thin-crust pies every week in the cafeteria as part of a prolific school lunch program.
