While DeSantis owed his Republican nomination to Trump, Gillum won a crowded Democratic primary race with a significant boost from Vermont Sen. "Obviously, we do not yet have any vote totals here, the night before the election".

"Earlier this evening I called Mr Ron DeSantis and congratulated him on what we expect will be him as the next governor of the great state of Florida".

DeSantis called Gillum a formidable opponent. Neither Georgia nor Florida has elected a Democratic governor in 20 years.

In a series of posts to Twitter, President Donald Trump has been positive towards himself and his party, despite the loss in the house.

The Florida race in particular appeared to be coming down to the wire.

Grammy-winning singer Rihanna is all in for Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum receiving the last-minute support needed to help him become Florida governor.

"We'll worry about history later but today, we're working to win".

Gillum had 60 percent of the vote in Miami-Dade and 68 percent in Broward County against DeSantis.

For the last few weeks, Real Clear Politics' average of the key polls has given Republicans 50 "safe" Senate seats and narrow leads in two of the seven "tossup" races (Missouri and Nevada).

"This guy being in the Oval Office motivated me to come out and vote", Jeffrey Pinder said after voting at Edison Towers at NW Seventh Avenue and 58th Street.

"The true story of this race is intense gratitude to President Trump". Gillum, 39, is the mayor of Tallahassee, a husband, a father of three, a FAMU grad- and he's vying to be the Democratic candidate in Florida's gubernatorial race. "We can still pull this off", radio personality Tom Joyner told a crowd of students and supporters, many of whom were clad in blue T-shirts emblazoned with Gillum's name.

From the beginning of his campaign, DeSantis, a lawyer and former congressman, tied his electoral chances to Trump, using frequent appearances on the Fox News network to defend the president and his policies. "Republicans had a very strong candidate Adam Putnam, who is in the primary against DeSantis..." Trump visited Florida and held a rally with DeSantis on October 31.

"My most significant and valued supporter is standing right next to me, despite what the media might say", DeSantis said of his wife Casey. He said health care is a priority for him because of a pre-existing medical condition.
